What is RYP?

Reality Tested Youth Programme (RYP) is a community-based organization (CBO) based in Nairobi-Kenya, founded by Calvin Mbugua (Knight French National Order of Merit) in 2004, under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Services, Serial No. 2116 and whose aim is to enhance the capacity of partner CBOs to regenerate local communities.

What We Do

Education and Skills Training

- Computer and internet skills training.
- CBO leadership and management training.
- Assisting youths to acquire education and skills training sponsorships.
- Entrepreneurship skills training.

Health and Well-being

- Linkages to health care services (HIV/AIDS care giving).
- counseling services.

Community and Economic Development

- Community based asset mapping and resource mobilization.
- Support towards Community Economic Development (CED) activities.
-Facilitating CBOs to acquire equipment and materials needed to work effectively.

Accomplishments

Through the Ongoza Njia Community Development Centre (OCDC), the following achievements have been realized since 2005:

1. Education and training

- Over 1,000 youth have been trained on basic computer and internet literacy skills.

- Supported and facilitated over 1,000 school dropouts to acquire sponsorships in skills training (carpentry, mechanic, dressmaking, hairdressing, catering, auto vehicle wiring and art and craft etc.).

- Assisted and linked 200 street children with basic support (food, clothing, shelter, counseling).

- Organized 25 leadership and management skills training for 70 partner associations to improve CBO/SHG management.

2. Community Economic Development

- Held 7 entrepreneurship skills training to enhance the employability skills of 125 youth and linked another 15 youth to acquire credit to establish small enterprises.

- Assisted in marketing and linking partner CBOs in exporting their art/crafts products to Fair Trade in France.

- Organized training sessions in Fair Trade business practices and on principles of co-operation in community based trade.

- Supported 8 partner associations establish urban farming ventures to promote food security in the slums.

- Engaged 3,500 families in ‘cash for work and food security' project in Mathare, Huruma and Kiamaiko.

3. Popular Education and Provision of Information

- Organized 5 dialogues circles aimed at sensitizing and educating target communities on Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and Youth and women funds.

- Trained 21 community members on social audit of CDF.

4. Access to equipment and material for CBO/SHG activities

- Supported 57 to acquire equipment and material support for sports, farming, garbage collection and recycling and art anti cultural activities.

- Enabled partner CBOs to access computers and internet facilities to aid their work in documentation and process information.

5. Environmental conservation and Resource Management

- Organized and trained more than 100 CBOs and SHGs on how to formulate an action plan and project document to rehabilitate and restore the Mathare River, one of the most polluted rivers in Kenya. The training resulted in formulation of a comprehensive action strategy to improve the overall environment of Mathare Sub County that is compliant to the people’s culture.

- Organized 6 months clean programme in Mathare and Huruma.

6. Peace and reconciliation (Dec. 2007 - July 2008)

- 1000 victims of post election violence provided with relief assistance through which people from all ethnic communities participated.

- 50 victims of sexual abuse during post election violence linked to medical and legal assistance.

Others

- Organized 1000 members to participate in slum food festival in Huruma.

- Organized community campaign on high cost of living.

- Organized 2-days community congress.

- Organized 1 day 'Climate Change' congress.

- Initiated Starehe Wananchi Congress concept which has been replicated in Kibera and Kasarani Constituencies.
